THE FOOD OF THE EAST
INDONESIA "LAND IF THE THOUSAND ISLANDS"
Land of the Islands might be suited best to describe this part of Asia. There are some 18.000 islands stretching approximately 8000km in length. The food is diverse as is the population. The general population is eating out more than cooking at home. They frequent “warung” food stalls which sell basic food at reasonable prices. If you are familiar with market food, it is recommendable to sample from those vendors their specialties. A good starting point is to frequent those who attract the largest local crowd. This is almost a guarantee that you will be presented with a genuine creation if Indonesian food. Tropical fruits are available throughout the year and while you there you should try the unusual durian. While it might need a bit of convincing, this fruit tastes actually better than it smells. Due to its own plantations, coffee is part of daily life. Don’t be surprised when you receive the coffee unfiltered, this is the way to drink it here. Just be patient and let the grounds settle for a moment before sipping. It is worth the wait!
